lock – what it is
I am going to explain to you exactly what a lock is. When it comes to locks there is a lot to talk about. The definition is keeping a door fastened only operated by a key. This is achieved by pins and springs inside the lock that move with the cuts in the key. The cuts line up what is called a sheer line. The sheer line is created when all of the pins line up in the cylinder to allow it to turn. Most locks have 5 rows of 2 pins stacked on top of each other. The bottom pins are different sizes that coincide with the correct key that will open it. If you get a rekey that means changing the pins inside for a new key to work.
Different types of locks
Their is lots of different types of locks. The difference is usually the size, shape, and type of key that works it. Some keys are edge cut. If you hold up an edge cut key you will see material missing from the side and it will be jagged. Most of these keys are kwikset and schlage. Laser cut car keys for example are straight on all sides but missing material in the middle. Dimple keys have dimples in the flat part of the key. Cam lock keys are circular like on a vending machine.
